8/24/2005 | AMSTERDAM: Full-day City Sights with Lunch

Dutch canals. Dutch masters. Dutch tulips. Everything Dutch today has order and is well orchestrated. That wasn't the case centuries ago. The Holy Roman Empire deemed the low-lying areas near the mouths of the Rhine, Meuse, and Scheldt Rivers the Netherlands. Not everyone agreed. Years of dissent finally ended in 1648 with the Treaty of Westphalia (which ended the Thirty Years' War). And the modern Netherlands began to prosper and amass a world empire. Your Voyagers Club exploration of the Kingdom of The Netherlands' capital city of Amsterdam follows the modern Dutch guide: order follows form.

First, we board glass-topped motor launches for an enchanting cruise along the canals of the Amstel River. We'll have a "waterside" view of the city, from its 17th-century merchant houses to its bridges and intersecting waterways, as we wend our way to an elegant luncheon at the Amstel Intercontinental Hotel. Lunch will be served in the hotel's private dining room, Stadhouders. Chef Katz, who, with the hotel's Sommelier, has chosen the perfect wines to complement each course, has specially planned a gourmet meal for us.

After lunch, we visit the Rijksmuseum. A private guided tour with a docent takes us through the many fine galleries, which include the works of Rembrandt van Rijn, Jan Vermeer, and Jan Steen.

Approximate Length: Six hours.

Suggested Attire: Casual elegant wear with comfortable shoes. Light to moderate walking.

10/14/2005 | Full-day Visit to Lucca with Lunch

Italy's port of Livorno (Leghorn) is the gateway to some of the most splendid vistas in the world. Medieval towns, exceptional vineyards, and groves of olive trees greet you in Tuscany. There's Chianti for everybody.

Lucca was a strategic walled city of the Roman Empire. Voyager Club members will learn all about this secluded enclave – and its perfectly preserved medieval architecture – on our walking tour. The city survived several "occupations" during the Middle Ages, but still managed to become a thriving center for the prosperous silk trade of the 12th and 13th centuries.

The Romanesque Church of San Michele enjoyed prominence between the 12th and 15th centuries. Masterpieces by Della Robbia and Lippi grace its walls. Surrounding historic buildings include the house where the composer Puccini was born. The Duomo is just beyond; this 6th century marvel is unique – its exterior is Romanesque and its interior is Gothic.

At San Michele Square we cross Via Fillungo, Lucca's main thoroughfare. The roadway is lined with classic medieval tower houses and charming contemporary shops. Its main square, Piazza del Anfiteatro, covers the site of the Roman Amphitheater.

Lunch will be perfect – fresh garlic–infused olives, a glass of Chianti, pasta al dente – at Buca di Sant'Antonio. This restaurant is renowned for its Tuscan cuisine. And we'll have a chance to sample some of the other wines of Tuscany.

Approximate Length: Six hours.

Suggested Attire: Casual resort wear with comfortable shoes. Moderate walking all day on cobblestone streets and uneven surfaces.
