SILVER WHISPER IS CHRISTENED IN GENOA, ITALY
On June 18, 2001 ultra-luxury cruise line, Silversea Cruises, welcomed the spectacular 382-guest, 28,258 grt Silver Whisper into its award-winning fleet with a day of celebration marked by traditional ceremony and the spirit of charity.
Following the time honored tradition of blessing and christening a ship, Godmother Marzia Lefebvre D'Ovidio, wife of Silversea Chairman Manfredi Lefebvre D'Ovidio, released a Salmanazar of Moët & Chandon onto the bow of Silver Whisper at a morning ceremony heralding the arrival of Silversea's fourth luxury vessel.
Immediately following the ceremony, Silver Whisper hosted a press conference to officially open the "A Heart for Africa" charity soccer match. Held in conjunction with the G8 Conference in Genoa, this celebrity game was a fundraising competition between Formula 1 drivers including Michael Schumacher, Jarno Truli, Giancarlo Fisichella and Jean Alesi, and popular singers of Italy such as Eros Ramazzotti, Zucchero, Antonacci and Lunapop.
That evening in Genoa Stadium, the celebrities lent their names and their hearts to "A Heart for Africa" with all proceeds from the match's 40,000-plus audience, as well as the nationwide telethon broadcast via Italy's RAI UNO, supporting a variety of charities benefiting the children of Africa. Silver Whisper again hosted the drivers, singers and other VIPs involved with "A Heart for Africa" aboard for a post-match celebratory dinner.
Silversea Joins in Fight to "Kick Polio out of Africa"
At the press conference, Bob Geldhof, a long-time advocate for the betterment of Africa, accepted on behalf of "A Heart for Africa," a $10,000 Silversea donation, presented by the line's President Bill Smith. The donation will specifically benefit "Kick Polio out of Africa," one of the charities targeted by "A Heart for Africa." Spearheaded by the World Health Organization, Rotary International, the CDC and UNICEF, the goal of "Kick Polio out of Africa" was to immunize 16 million difficult-to-reach children in Central Africa through synchronized national immunization days (NIDs) between Angola, Congo-Brazzaville, the Democratic Republic of the Congo, and Gabon last July, August and September.
In 2000, a record 550 million children under five years were immunized during intensified NIDs in 82 countries. This included India, where 152 million children were vaccinated in three days, and a synchronized effort across West and Central Africa, which immunized 76 million children in 17 countries.
"Silversea was honored to celebrate the arrival of Silver Whisper in conjunction with such a prestigious and important fundraising event as "A Heart for Africa," said the line's CEO Albert Peter. "We were especially pleased to support the specific efforts of "Kick Polio out of Africa" as the health of the world's children is a cause near to our hearts."
Indeed, in conjunction with the launch of Silver Whisper's sister ship, Silver Shadow in September of 2000, the line implemented a fleetwide campaign to support the British Airways "Change for Good" appeal, whereby travelers donate their unused foreign currencies to benefit a variety of UNICEF programs. Since the line's inception in 1994, Silversea's worldwide philanthropy has generated nearly $2.5 million via its corporate donations program as well as its establishment of the Silversea/janet Burke Endowment to the Multiple Myeloma Research Foundation.
With the launch of the 296-guest, 16,800 grt Silver Cloud in 1994 and sister ship Silver Wind in 1995, Silversea established itself as the defining name in luxurious and sophisticated travel. The line's award-winning all-suite ships bring guests to the far corners of the globe in peerless style and comfort, blending large ship amenities with an intimate onboard atmosphere of casual elegance. The addition of Silver Shadow and Silver Whisper firmly establishes Silversea's position as the leader in elite small ship cruising.
Silversea's all-inclusive air/sea fares are by far the most comprehensive in the industry making travel near effortless by including roundtrip air transportation, a deluxe pre-cruise hotel stay and all transfers and porterage, expertly arranged by the line's professional travel staff. Aboard the vessels, Silversea's all-inclusive philosophy makes guests feel "at home" by conveniently including all wine, spirits and champagne throughout the ship, all gratuities, all port charges and a special shoreside excursion, The Silversea Experience, on select voyages.
SILVERSEA'S NEW SILVER WHISPER ARRIVES IN AMERICA
The arrival of Silversea Cruises' new 382-guest Silver Whisper in Philadelphia on September 24, 2001, marked the US debut of the world's most luxurious new cruise ship. Launched to great acclaim in Genoa, Italy in July 200l and accommodating a pampered group of only 382 guests, Silver Whisper, sister ship to the acclaimed Silver Shadow launched September 2000, features the highest space-to-guest ratio and the highest crew-to-guest ratio of any liner in the world.
At a time when mass-market cruise lines are building mega-ships upwards of 3,000 passengers, and even luxury lines are building ships of 700 to 900 passengers, Silversea's intimate vessels continue to define the intimacy and clubby conviviality of elite luxury travel. Remaining true to the ultra-luxury market, Silversea is the only line that has continued to expand its fleet with new purpose-built all-suite vessels designed to cater to just 170 to 190 pampered couples.
Though designed to carrying an intimate complement of pampered guests, at 28,258 gross registered tons the new Silver Whisper features more space per passenger than any other ship at sea, as well as a host of world-class amenities typically reserved for larger liners. A world-class Mandara Spa, a new Poolside Grille, the Humidor cigar club by Davidoff, and Le Champagne wine and champagne bar by Moët & Chandon offer a glimpse at the diversions guests will enjoy aboard this innovative vessel. The world's only Bvlgari boutiques at sea also reside aboard Silversea's exclusive vessels, including Silver Whisper of course, for those who wish to purchase shiny remembrances of their cruise trip of a lifetime.
Silver Whisper also offers golf enthusiasts the Silver Links 365 program, offering a year-round golf experience featuring onboard golfing cages, onboard professional golf instructors and the chance to play some of the world's most exciting courses.
Le Champagne, Silver Whisper's new Wine & Champagne Bar
Ultra-luxury cruise line Silversea Cruises announces Le Champagne, the elegant wine and champagne bar designed in collaboration with Moët & Chandon as one of the signature public rooms aboard the line's. new vessels, Silver Shadow and Silver Whisper.
Adjacent to the bistro-style Terrace Café and The Humidor, the newly designed cigar club by Davidoff, Le Champagne will be a sophisticated gathering place for before and after dinner drinks as well as a versatile venue for private wine tastings and dinner parties. Le Champagne will accommodate up to 24 guests, for everything from a celebratory toast among friends before dinner, to an intimate glass of port to end a special evening.
Designed in collaboration with Moët & Chandon, world-famous purveyor of fine champagne and Silversea's very own house champagne, the decor of the room will be similar to The Humidor in finishes of rich woods and warm tones, but with lighter furnishings and a more open floor plan. The decor of Le Champagne will also incorporate accents of Moët & Chandon's signature emblem, the crossed red ribbon, which wraps the neck of each bottle of champagne. There will also be a mosaic of etched glass revealing famous quotes regarding champagne from great figures in history such as Winston Churchill and Voltaire.
"From the beginning, Silversea has successfully and uniquely bridged the gap between the luxury of small ship cruising and the diversions of large ocean liners," said President Bill Smith. "In designing Le Champagne, we were privileged to work with the professionals at Moët & Chandon to take that tradition to the next level by offering a truly elegant venue where guests can come to socialize and enjoy wine and champagne from all over the world."
In line with Silversea's all-inclusive philosophy - by far the most comprehensive in the industry - all beverages, including select wines, spirits and champagnes are conveniently included in the cruise fare, creating a relaxed and convivial atmosphere aboard the ships.
Guests may choose to enjoy the wines offered on Silversea's Complimentary Selection, or indulge in the purchase of a rare vintage from the line's Connoisseur's List to celebrate a special occasion or simply toast a magical sunset. Understanding that the appreciation of wine is a very personal experience, Silversea's knowledgeable sommeliers are always eager to chat with guests regarding their preferences to assist guests in choosing the selection which is right for them.
