TRAVEL BY FREIGHTER
By Andrew Gnoza
One of the questions I am asked most often is " what about ocean travel by
freighters " ?
Following are some newsletters and other sources of information
regarding travel on freighters.

Freighter TravLtips magazine has been published (6 times a year) with
first hand accounts of freighter voyagers since 1967. All the stories are
written by passengers, giving the publication an unusual edge. There are
occasional stories regarding voyages on smaller cruise ships. An
introductory " special edition " of the the publication named " ROAM THE
WORLD BY FREIGHTER " was filled with an assortment of past articles
regarding freighter travel. A division of the association is available to
book freighter and speciality cruises for it's subscribers / members.

Sea the Difference
Passenger Agents for Mediterranean Shipping
420 Fifth Avenue #804
New York, NY 10018-2702
800-666-9333
212-354-4409
A brochure describes the services they provide in regards to
booking your trip on a ship owned and operated by Mediterranean Shipping
Company. A description of the lines various routes, schedules and vessels
as well as costs is available from their office in New York.
Ocean going freighters are in the business of transporting goods and
merchandise, passengers are a sideline and added source of income. The
ships voyage may be altered, delayed or prolonged depending on what its
present cargo and scheduled cargo to be laden on board dictates.
Freighters usually give you more time in port, however this again is
dictated by the time it takes to unload and load it's cargo.
As a passenger on a cargo-carrying vessel you must be able to adapt to
these changing conditions. You may find yourself waiting 2 to 5 days for
the freighter to arrive or depart as they are not on a strict schedule
like a cruise ship.
Remember this is not a cruise ship. You may be on the vessel
alone so bring along books, knitting, etc. You may have an
international crew with only a few higher ranking officers being able to
communicate with you in English. The food may not be what you are accustomed
to.
Freighter travel is not for everyone, but if you can adapt to the ways of
this type of travel you will have an unforgettable
experience.
