A native of Forio d'Ischia, Italy, Captain Giovanni Gallo graduated from Francisco Caracciolo Nautical School in Procida in 1974 and began his career with Carnival Cruise Lines as third officer aboard the former Carnival ship TSS Mardi Gras two years later.
After serving as both first and second officer on a number of Carnival vessels, Gallo was promoted to staff captain in 1984 and traveled to Aalborg, Denmark to oversee the MS Holiday during its final stages of construction. In 1986, Gallo also oversaw the introduction of the SuperLiner Celebration and was part of the original team that launched the SuperLiner Fantasy, Carnival's first 70,000-ton vessel, in 1990.
In July of 1990, Captain Gallo was promoted to captain and given command of the Tropicale and, over the years, has served as captain of the SuperLiners Jubilee and Ecstasy. In 1994, Captain Gallo oversaw the delivery of Carnival's fourth 70,000-ton SuperLiner, the MS Fascination, as well as the fifth in the series, the MS Imagination, which debuted in July of 1995.
Gallo was then appointed captain of the new MS Carnival Destiny. Nine months ago, three months before the Carnival Destiny's preliminary sea trials, he took up residence in Monfalcone, Italy, near the Fincantieri shipyard, in preparation for his duties as master of the world's first 100,000-plus-ton cruise ship.
