SUPERLINER ELATION, CARNIVAL CRUISE LINES
ARTISTIC THEMES, INNOVATIONS AND NEW FACILITIES DISTINGUISH SUPERLINER ELATION
MIAMI -- Carnival Cruise Lines celebrates the spirit of mythological Muses and the fantastic diversity of art they inspire in the dramatic interior design of the all-new "Fun Ship" Elation.
"I was taken with the notion of Muses from Greek mythology as a unifying theme for the Elation because they inspire artists to create," said Joe Farcus, ship architect for the Carnival fleet. "The central idea is composers and their compositions -- not just musical works, but also drama and literature," he added.
The magical Muses inspired brilliantly detailed lounges and atmospheric public rooms throughout the Elation. The ship's vast seven-deck atrium and attraction-filled promenade are embellished with graceful floor-to-ceiling columns and finely crafted classical reliefs. Symbols of the Muses, such as the scrolls of Clio, Muse of history, decorate entranceways, while the Muses of music and poetry -- Euterpe and Erato -- are represented by flute and harp in Elation's lounges, along with Thalia's comic mask and dancing Terpsichore's lyre.
While the Elation features the best of Carnival's Fantasy-class vessels, it also incorporates new facillities along with some of the most popular elements of the Carnival Destiny. The Fantasy class -- named for the first ship of the design -- currently consists of six, 70,000-gross-registered-ton ships. The Carnival Destiny, the largest passenger vessel in the world, debuted in November 1996, topping 100,000 gross registered tons.
The Elation is the first Carnival vessel to have the dedicated facilities to accommodate small meetings and incentive groups. The mahogany-trimmed, private room features state-of-the-art equipment and full-service amenities for on-board conferences. The room is located adjacent to the aft dining room, and can be used for private cocktail functions.
Children's World on Sports Deck has been expanded to offer youngsters a spacious, engaging activity center with computer and video games, playground equipment and crafts. The space is similar in design and amenities to the Children's Club on Carnival Destiny.
The Plaza Bar is yet another example of a Destiny-borrowed idea. Centrally located on Empress Deck in the spacious atrium lobby, this bar is an informal spot to meet for a cocktail, listen to live music or watch sporting events on a retractable big-screen television. Another technological feature that debuted with the Carnival Destiny is the futuristic Virtual World, an electronic-game playground popular with children and adults alike.
CARNIVAL'S NEW MS ELATION WORLD'S FIRST CRUISE SHIP TO FEATURE NEW AZIPOD PROPULSION SYSTEM
MIAMI -- Carnival Cruise Lines' new MS Elation is the first passenger vessel ever to feature the revolutionary new Azipod propulsion system, which provides advances in operations, maneuverability and fuel efficiency far exceeding that of any other system currently in operation.
The units were created by Kvaerner Masa-Azipod of Helsinki, Finland, a subsidiary of Helsinki, Finland-based Kvaerner Masa-Yards, the shipyard responsible for the construction of the Elation, as well as the other six vessels in Carnival's popular "Fantasy-class" series. The eighth and final ship in the series, the MS Paradise, the world's first smoke-free cruise ship scheduled to enter service in November, will also feature the Azipod system.
The Azipod cruise ship system is based on similar designs introduced in the last eight years on ice breaking tankers. Operational results were so significant that not only was a cruise ship version of the Azipods developed but experts predict this system will become the propulsion drive of choice on future cruise ship projects worldwide.
"The design of the Azipod system is based on simplicity and reliability," said Jim Rae, Helsinki shipyard supervisor for Carnival Technical Services. "What this means to a cruise line is propulsion units that are the most operationally superior of any available in the world. The dividends this system will provide in maneuverability, space and fuel efficiencies are immeasurable," he added.
The Azipod design is unique in that it pulls a ship through the water rather than push it like conventional propulsion systems. Azipods eliminate the need for rudders, long shaft lines, conventional drive units and stern thrusters thus taking up less overall space on board the vessel. They also make a cruise ship easier to steer and maneuver while fuel savings are achieved through improved hydrodynamic efficiencies. Overall noise and vibration reduction are also highlights of the Azipod system.
Carnival's Elation will feature two 14-megawatt Azipod units which are the equivalent of 38,080 horsepower.
'CHILDREN'S WORLD' ON CARNIVAL'S NEW MS ELATION REFLECTS LINE'S GROWING EMPHASIS ON FAMILY MARKET
MIAMI -- The new "Fun Ship" Elation houses the largest children's facility to date in the Carnival Cruise Lines fleet and features such highlights as a computer lab and arts and crafts center.
The Elation also includes an expanded emphasis on teens. A new specialized position within the ship's nine-member youth staff focuses solely on developing and organizing such fun teen-oriented activities as late-night movies, photography workshops and "mocktail parties" where teens can socialize and enjoy non-alcoholic specialty drinks.
The new children's amenities on Elation are part of Carnival's top-rated year-round kids program, "Camp Carnival," which is available on each of the line's 12 "Fun Ship" and expected to host a record 175,000 kids in 1998."Families have always represented a very important market for us and we've incorporated a number of new enhancements to the Elation's children's program that should further bolster our position as family cruise leader," said Bob Dickinson, Carnival president.
The focal point of the Elation's "Camp Carnival" program is "Children's World," an expansive 2,500-square-foot play area which is divided into three different sections. In one area, there's a computer lab featuring the latest in personal computer technology, as well as a bank of fun, educational computer games. The last section contains a multi-tiered indoor play area complete with a climbing maze and activity wall stocked with toys, games and puzzles, along with a 16-monitor "video wall" displaying kids' favorite movies, music videos and cartoons. There's also an outdoor play area featuring a fun, schooner-shaped playhouse.
"Children's World" also employs a new lighting system that utilizes fiber-optic bundles on the ceiling to create constantly changing silhouettes of pre-historic creatures. The effect was created by Carnival's interior architect Joe Farcus, who also designed the room's playful dinosaur motif and custom checkerboard carpeting.
In addition to the new play room, Elation features Virtual World, located on Promenade Deck. This high-tech facility is equipped with the latest video and arcade games, including a number of virtual reality games, which should appeal to kids and adults alike.
The Elation also offers a wide variety of age-specific activities from morning 'til night, ranging from scavenger hunts and talent shows to special backstage tours where kids can meet the ship's on-board entertainers "up close and personal." Parents and kids can also enjoy their "Fun Ship" cruise together as a family with such multi-generational activities as family arts and crafts sessions. Babysitting services are also available for a nominal fee.
And, like all Carnival ships, the Elation offers three different options for swimming and splashing fun. In addition to a children's wading pool with its own "kiddie slide" on Promenade Deck, the Lido Deck pool features a cascading water slide with 114 feet of exhilarating twists and turns. A third pool is located aft on Verandah Deck.

Among these is the Ionithermie Superdetoxificaton Treatment, a 90-minute therapeutic slimming treatment that utilizes a cleansing algae concentrate, and La Therapie, a "bio-technical" facial combining organic gels and creams with low-level electronic stimuli resulting in a relaxing, rejuvenating sensation.
For those who like to exercise while taking in the fresh sea air, the Elation also offers a padded, one-eighth-mile jogging track encircling Sun Deck. Early risers can also take advantage of the organized one-mile walks that take place each morning. And, after a workout or treatment, guests can enjoy a soothing steam or sauna or relax in one of the spa's two skylit whirlpools. Four outdoor whirpools are also available.
Carnival's commitment to today's healthier lifestyles also extends to the main dining rooms with the line's popular Nautica Spa Fare selections, available on lunch and dinner menus. These guilt-free menu choices, designated with a special symbol, are lower in calories, cholesterol, fat and sodium. Poultry and meats are roasted or broiled, salads are prepared with low-fat or fat-free dressings and desserts with sugar substitutes. A variety of vegetarian dishes are also available.
The Elation will begin a year-round program of seven-day cruises to the Mexican Riviera April 12. The ship will depart every Sunday from Los Angeles, calling at Puerto Vallarta, Mazatlan and Cabo San Lucas.
